Silk on linen needlework sampler, dated 1813

Boston, Massachusetts silk on linen needlework sampler, dated 1813, wrought by Mary Dennis, who attended Mrs. Dobel's Seminary, beneath verse is a sewn scene with Mary addressing her aunt beside a cottage, trees and two water fowl on a pond, all surrounded by a border with bow knotted blue ribbons and delicate trailing vines and flowers, 20 1/4" x 16 1/4". This superb example retains its original giltwood frame. Provenance: M. Finkel & Daughter; The Collection of the Late Ann G Sickles.
